Admission Requirements

The on-line, electronic application, along with the supporting printed documents, constitute a complete  application for admission – they are not an offer of admission or a contract for enrollment.  Qualification criteria specified in the application are the minimum criteria, and no applicant is guaranteed admission to the Program, even though he/she may meet the minimum criteria.  Emory University reserves the right to select for admission those applicants it deems best qualified for admission, while complying with all applicable laws.  Emory University reserves the right to determine program size and/or cancel the program.

The application period is open from August through December of each year for matriculation in late August of the following year.  Application deadline is January 1st.  All supporting documents must be received no later than January 1st.  Applications are only scheduled for individuals who have complete applications on file; incomplete applications will not be considered.  Please submit electronic applications only.  No hard-copy applications will be accepted.

Basic Requirements

  • Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework.

  • Baccalaureate degree in any major field of study, including above average performance in courses required in a premed curriculum (click here to view a list of prerequisite courses).

  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores from either the paper-based or the computer-based examination taken within five years prior to application.  You do not have to take the subject-specific exam; we only require the general exam. The program must receive official score reports directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The GRE code for the Anesthesiology Program (listed as Emory U Anesthesiology) is 5692.

  • The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores may be submitted instead of GRE scores.  The MCAT must have been taken within five years prior to application.  The program must receive an official hard-copy MCAT score report.

  • Three reference forms from persons familiar with the applicant’s prior academic performance,  potential, character, work habits, and suitability for graduate study leading into a career in clinical practice. Avoid sending only character references from family friends, or clergy.

  • At least eight hours of exposure to the clinical practice of anesthesia in the surgical setting to ensure familiarity with the anesthesia practice and the environment in which day-to-day work occurs.

  • Interview at the request of the Admissions Committee on-site at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia.

International Graduates

Guidelines for Graduates of Colleges and Universities outside the United States

In addition to the General Admission Requirements (above), the applicant who has graduated from a college
or university of a country for which English is not the primary language (regardless of United States’
residency status) must do the following:

  1. Applicant must obtain a minimum score of 600 on the written (or comparable score on the computerized)
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The program must receive an official score report
directly from Educational Testing Service, Princeton, NJ.

  2. Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work taken outside of the United States must
be submitted to the program, along with a report from a credentialing organization such as Educational
    Credential Evaluators
, Incorporated or World Education Services International Academic
    Credential Evaluation
. The report must demonstrate equivalency to a bachelor’s degree
received at an American college or university and must evaluate the transcript course-by-course for
equivalency to required prerequisites for admission to the Anesthesiology Program.

Please note that no exceptions will be made for required course work regardless of degrees or certification
received outside the United States, experience, work background, or education.
